Sydney Indie Film Festival – Australiens – Saturday 17th October – Sci-Fi Opening Afternoon

Feature Film:

Australiens (Australia)

At the age of 10, Australian-born Andi Gibson had what she describes as a close encounter with a flying saucer. Naturally, everyone assumed she was bonkers. That is until one notable evening, 17 years later, when an airborne extra-terrestrial armada launches a nation-wide assault on Andi’s home country and at the same time, for unspecified reasons, kidnaps her mother. To add to the debacle, it seems the other nations of the world are far too insulted by their exclusion from the attack to come to Australia’s aid. Now it’s up to Andi, her hypochondriac brother Elliot, retired boxer cousin Keith and documentary filmmaker friend Cam to stop the attack and rescue Andi’s mum. Enlisting the help of Andi’s equal-parts mysterious and cringe-worthy father, the gang must battle car-chasing spaceships, martial-arts aliens, giant killer robots and, perhaps most frighteningly, a deluge of family secrets in their fight to save Australia. Bloody hell, this is gonna be a long night.

Tierra Caliente (Mexico)

This is the story of a family from the state of Guerrero, Mexico. As they go about their normal lives, they are caught in the crossfire between the Narco and the military. The film portrays how one hundred taxi drivers go on a search to find the missing husband of Daughter 2 and how the tragedy affects her and the rest of her family. The screenplay is transcript of conversations from the family recorded over a period of two years. Actors play the members of the family to protect their identity, but we are able to hear the actual recordings throughout the film, to remind the audience that these people are real.

Short Films:

Janne of Love (Bulgaria)

“Janne of love” is a humorous investigation of the communicational problems, cultural differences and prejudices of contemporary Europeans. Bulgarian, Finnish and English language “get along, hide real intentions and clash” just like the characters, pointing out the invisible borders in a globalized world.

The wild journey starts in Bulgaria, where Millitsa and Anni meet two Finnish boys – Timo and Ilkka. Beer is flowing, the temperatures are getting high, so as the passions. After getting intoxicated and recklessly breaking the law, the feelings of the main characters evolve and culminate in a shameless love confession on the dance floor.

Finland, Timo and Millitsa are already married. When alone they are the perfect match, but in public the joyful and noisy Millitsa gives Timo a hard time. Soon the stereotypical views cause their love language to fall apart. They start speaking their native tongues and their mind. Clichés and the bias that Eastern and Western Europeans have against each other burst out in a hilarious argument.

Will there be a solution in this never-ending conflict? And who, for God’s sake, is Janne!?
